En enero de 2020, el Departamento de Asuntos Políticos y de Consolidación de la Paz puso en marcha la Célula de Innovación, un equipo interdisciplinario dedicado a ayudar al Departamento y a sus presencias sobre el terreno a comprender, estudiar, ensayar y ampliar nuevas tecnologías, herramientas y prácticas en materia de prevención de conflictos, mediación y consolidación de la paz. En respuesta al llamamiento del Secretario General para que el sistema de las Naciones Unidas acelere la adopción de métodos innovadores, la Célula de Innovación cataliza la innovación en el ámbito de la paz y la seguridad, al tiempo que proporciona un foro para que los colegas de la Sede de las Naciones Unidas y de las oficinas sobre el terreno colaboren en la solución de problemas y el diseño centrado en el ser humano.
La Célula forma parte de la Red de Innovación de las Naciones Unidas y trabaja para impulsar un ecosistema de socios tecnológicos, académicos y de la sociedad civil fuera del sistema de las Naciones Unidas en cuestiones de paz y seguridad, aprovechando así la innovación para lograr el objetivo común de la paz.
